Acne

WHAT IS ACNE?

Acne is a chronic disorder of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Acne causes clogged pores which lead to inflammation and infection. There are different types of acne including comedones (“whiteheads and blackheads”), pimples, and cysts. Acne may occur on the face, chest, upper back, shoulders, and neck. Severe acne can sometimes result in pigmented or textured scarring.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ACNE?

The telltale signs of acne are inflammation and redness. There may be pus-filled pimples, or there may simply be bumps on the skin. In either case, acne can sometimes also be sensitive, sore, or painful to touch. The skin around it can also feel oily or dry, depending on your skin type.

WHAT CAUSES ACNE?

There are many, many causes of acne which are unique to each person. Most people experience acne during their teenage years, but it goes away during adulthood. Some patients still experience acne as an adult, leading to frustration. Some of the most common culprits of acne include:

  • Hormone fluctuations
  • Stress
  • Diet
  • Genetics
  • Lifestyle factors

ACNE TREATMENT OPTIONS

For most patients, acne is easily treated with the right medication. Topical medications like retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and topical antibiotics are often the first line of treatment. In some cases, oral medications can help improve hormonal acne. Finally, there are a variety of professional skin treatments like chemical peels that can help treat and prevent breakouts. At Biltmore Dermatology, our team will tailor your treatment plan to your specific needs and skin type.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main cause of acne?

The main cause of acne is clogged pores. More specifically, excess sebum oil mixes with dead skin cells, dirt, makeup, and other surface debris and gets trapped in the pores, leading to inflammation and acne breakouts.

What can worsen acne?

Acne triggers are different for everyone but common things that can worsen acne are hormone changes, foods that are high in carbohydrates or sugar, and oily makeup or hair products.

Does the sun make acne worse or better?

There is a common misconception that the sun dries out acne and improves acne breakouts. Unfortunately, drying out the skin can actually lead to future acne breakouts because the skin will overproduce oil to compensate.

How can I make acne go away?

A good skincare routine is one of the simplest ways to get rid of acne and prevent future breakouts. Make sure to cleanse your skin thoroughly every night to remove makeup and sweat from the day. Exfoliating ingredients like salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and retinoids can help unclog the pores and remove excess oil but be careful to not overuse harsh exfoliating products.

Is there a quick fix for acne?

Skincare products or prescribed medications with benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, salicylic acid, and antibiotics can help quickly clear up an acne breakout. Professional acne treatments like chemical peels or facials are also highly effective for stubborn or persistent acne.
