WHAT IS ACNE?
Acne is a chronic disorder of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Acne causes clogged pores which lead to inflammation and infection. There are different types of acne including comedones (“whiteheads and blackheads”), pimples, and cysts. Acne may occur on the face, chest, upper back, shoulders, and neck. Severe acne can sometimes result in pigmented or textured scarring.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF ACNE?
The telltale signs of acne are inflammation and redness. There may be pus-filled pimples, or there may simply be bumps on the skin. In either case, acne can sometimes also be sensitive, sore, or painful to touch. The skin around it can also feel oily or dry, depending on your skin type.
WHAT CAUSES ACNE?
There are many, many causes of acne which are unique to each person. Most people experience acne during their teenage years, but it goes away during adulthood. Some patients still experience acne as an adult, leading to frustration. Some of the most common culprits of acne include:
- Hormone fluctuations
- Stress
- Diet
- Genetics
- Lifestyle factors

For most patients, acne is easily treated with the right medication. Topical medications like retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and topical antibiotics are often the first line of treatment. In some cases, oral medications can help improve hormonal acne. Finally, there are a variety of professional skin treatments like chemical peels that can help treat and prevent breakouts. At Biltmore Dermatology, our team will tailor your treatment plan to your specific needs and skin type.
