What are Cysts?
Cysts are lumps or pockets that form in the skin (typically called sebaceous cysts). Cysts can be small and unnoticeable, or they may become large and swollen. They are typically filled with material or fluid like pus and are often harmless – however, they can sometimes cause discomfort or grow in a visible area, meaning it’s important to get treatment from a dermatology-certified provider.
What are the Symptoms of Cysts?
Cysts typically look like a large pimple or bump on the skin. They’re often skin-colored but have a white or yellowish center. If a cyst is large enough, it may become painful and swollen, especially if it becomes infected. Cysts can occur often but are not harmful or even painful. Occasionally, however, a cyst can be problematic if it becomes large, infected, or painful – especially if it’s in a sensitive area.
What Causes Cysts?
Cysts most often occur because of blocked sebaceous glands, sometimes called pores. They can also occur because of an ingrown hair or injury. At its most basic level, a cyst forms when skin cells (rather than shedding) move deeper into the skin and begin to multiply, forming a bubble or sac. This sac continues to grow and eventually becomes visible on the surface of the skin. Sometimes, you may be able to feel a cyst developing before it becomes visible – you may feel a hard or inflamed area on the skin.
Cyst Treatment Options
It’s important to seek treatment from a dermatology-certified provider if you’re experiencing pain or significant inflammation from a cyst. Although cysts can go away on their own, an untreated cyst can become infected and dangerous. Additionally, you should never try to drain a cyst on your own – it may cause significant scarring or put you at risk of infection. Our team led by Dermatology Certified Nurse Practitioner Ryan Patterson can provide prompt, same-day care for cysts so you can get relief.
Treatment for cysts typically involves steroid injections or draining the cyst to prevent infection and inflammation. Our team can ensure that your cyst is properly dressed and help you understand when to follow up.

LEARN MOREManaging Cysts
Cysts will typically heal on their own after your appointment with our team. We’ll help you understand how to care for the area and keep it free of infection. Cysts can’t always be prevented, but you can reduce your chances of developing cysts by practicing good hygiene to prevent buildup in your pores and follicles. If you experience a large or painful cyst, it’s always best to see a dermatology-certified provider right away.
