What is a Yearly Skin Exam?
A yearly skin exam is an appointment where our certified dermatology provider will assess your skin for any problems. A skin exam is designed to primarily screen for skin cancer. However, it can also identify any unique changes to your skin that highlight other treatable health issues including acne, eczema and psoriasis, and other hair, skin, and nail conditions.
A skin exam of your entire body requires that every inch of your skin be examined, not just visible skin areas the sun touches. This is because skin cancer is not always found on the skin most exposed to sunlight. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, does not need any sun or tanning bed use at all.
Yearly Skin Exam Candidates
Anyone and everyone can benefit from a yearly skin exam. Although it’s recommended to screen yourself at home monthly, a professional skin exam can help you track and prevent many serious skin concerns before they worsen. By catching them early, our team can help you determine your best treatment options when your concerns are most easily treatable.
If you’ve had skin cancer or another serious skin concern in the past, you may be recommended to see our certified dermatology provider more often than yearly. This is because you may be at greater risk of recurrence.

VIEW BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOSWhat to Expect During a Yearly Skin Exam
Before your yearly skin exam, we ask that you make the following preparations so we can most effectively assess your skin and health history:
- Bring your complete list of any medications, including the dosage
- Know your family history
- Make note of any new areas, including factors like changes, itching, bleeding, growths, or lesions
- Remove all nail polish from fingernails and toenails
- Share previous skin cancers, precancers, or moles
To begin, you’ll discuss any concerns and health history with our certified dermatology provider. Then, our provider will perform a detailed check of your skin including difficult-to-see areas like the back, scalp, toes, and genitals. This is usually done using a specialized scope that allows a close view of any concerning areas. If you have any noted spots, our provider will take extra time to assess them and possibly perform a biopsy. Finally, our team will discuss next steps if any concerns are found.
